ALDO ON SKY
December 2014
I just started shooting sky pictures because it was a huge canvas to work on. No one bothered me; a few asked what I was taking pictures of. I just said beautiful clouds, or a jet leaving a contrail across the sky. I think that the biggest reason was that I didn't have to interact with people. I was always a photojournalist working for one ratty newspaper or another. Making about the same as I would at McDonalds. One day I just stopped. I had an editor who was a hero of mine. A life long alcoholic he got into AA and stayed sober for the last twenty-eight years of his life. He told me when it comes to journalism, those who can do, those who can't do sports, and those who can't do sports, do sports on television. He said that I should tell my Mother that I had an honest job playing the piano in a brothel. That was his humor coming through. I appreciated it. I learned more from him than I did in photo school. When he died, I walked away and never looked back.
ALDO ON LINCOLN HEIGHTS 90031 September 2011
Lincoln Heights is a state of mind as much as a physical place. It was a land grant given to
Doctor John Griffin after he spent ten years fighting small pox in L.A. He made it into a white-collar enclave with Victorian mansions. It has housed several waves of immigrants from Mexico, Italy, China, and now Latin again.
I lived there from 1949 to 1953. I learned about the Victorian era by helping a family of spinsters who lived in a beautiful mansion where I did everything that needed youth and energy. The Jacoby sisters were wonderful ladies and taught me to play whist, a Victorian card game. It was a great place, filled with old Victorian houses, now, mostly gone. I made my first communion at Sacred Heart, and my grandmother went to Saint Peters Italian church. Our lives revolved around those two churches. They are both still there. I've never been the same since. It was a wonderful childhood.
The time frame for these images is 1980 until 1983 I got a lot of cooperation from locals which surprised me since it's a poor neighborhood and I suspected there would be a lot of resistance. I quit the series when some gang bangers threatened me.
ALDO ON TECH
I mostly used a Pentax 6 by 7. I also used a Nikon for night pix. I do use a Widelux panoramic camera, but I don't think there are any prints in this batch. I used Costco paper. It's good glossy stock. Early on in this series I used T-Max film and processed and printed in silver. I waited until digital to really get into it. For this set of prints I used an Epson archival printer.
LINCOLN HEIGHTS 90031 Part 1 contains 46 images. Part 2 contains another 40 (or so) images. If you aree interested in purchasing prints or sets contact the artist at:
