Debra Alvis |
I was born in January 26, 1958. I have been drawing since I was quite young. |
The predominant support and encouragement came from my Grandfather. He placed great emphasis on the importance of drawing from my imagination and creating from my soul. |
I dabbled in paint and pen throughout the years but my main medium was pencil until 2001. One day in 2001I picked up a pen and drew a horse (Horse not shown). It felt like an accident, when I had finished and realized how smoothly the image formed. (Images 10 thru 16 among many others). I continued drawing and experimenting with pen and ink. I began with black and white creations, and later colored ink. |
Then in 2012 my energy, motivation and focus shifted to acrylic painting. One day as I was looking through landscape photos I stumbled upon a photo of a sunset, (Image 1) I felt I could use as a starting point of learning the acrylic medium and to further my internal experience. |
My inspiration comes from the need to deepen and to better understand my psyche, to grow spiritually, emotionally and mentally and to connect with others. When people show interest in my work (like my grandfather) I feel inspired to bring forth an insightful perspective for the artistic audience. My focus and goal is to create dynamic and intense renditions of my mysterious, internal world and to share these images with an audience of visual seekers. I want to pull the attention of the viewer from outside influences and introduce them to an internal perspective of meaning and if accomplished we are for a moment in time, connected. |
Chronologically between the 'horizon' and 'barrier' images I sometimes need to produce abstract images. This seems to be necessary. I don't feel the abstracts to be ready to share but they seem to be like a 'pallet cleansing' that makes the next painting possible.
